The Elbow

The elbow is a hinge joint that is made up of three bones:

  • Humerus – the upper arm bone
  • Ulna – on the inside of the lower arm when the arms are down and palms facing forwardElbow-Healthy_v1_20141126
  • Radius – on the opposite side of the lower arm to the ulna

These three bones connect to form three joints within a capsule

The proximal radioulnar allows the lower arm to be rotated during pronation (flipping the hand over towards the body) and supination (flipping the hand up away from the body). This rotation occurs during hand-to-mouth eating movements, for example. The ulnar collateral ligament on the inner side of elbow stabilise the overall joint.
