John G. Lane, M.D. grew up in Los Angeles, California, attended Hollywood High School and subsequently, the University of Southern California, where he was a left-handed pitcher on the University’s Division 1 baseball team. After graduation, he played professional baseball in the Mexican Northern League before attending Christ College at Cambridge University to study experimental psychology. He began his medical education at Yale University and completed his orthopedic residency at the University of Michigan. Dr. Lane completed a sports medicine fellowship at the University of California, San Diego (U.C.S.D.), where he studied under Dr. Dale Daniel, and had great instruction in research under Professors David Amiel, Bob Sah and Savio Woo. Dr. Lane is affiliated with U. C. S. D. and has a private clinical practice in San Diego which focuses on complex knee and shoulder injuries. He serves as the team physician for the San Diego Strike Force, a member of the Indoor Football League.

Following his fellowship, Dr. Lane has continued a long, productive collaboration with translational scientists and physicians at U.C.S.D. He has been mentored by and collaborated with Professor David Amiel, working in the fields of ligament and cartilage. Dr. Lane was awarded an Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation Grant focusing on the “The Effects of the Holmium: YAG Laser upon Articular Cartilage.” He has performed numerous animal and human studies, evaluating cartilage repair, including assessment of osteochondral autograft transplantation techniques in goat and rabbit models. He has also participated in NIH/SBIR grants for “Cartilage – Cartilage Adhesion by Photo Polymerization” and “A Novel Engineered, Composite Construct for Articular Cartilage Repair” with Dr. Anthony Ratcliffe. Current cartilage research is focused on cellular based repair with recent studies using ACI/MACI techniques, as well as a study evaluating the effects of decreasing joint load on subchondral bone edema with bracing. Dr. Lane does basic science research involving animal models with rotator cuff repair paradigms.

Dr. Lane is a member in good standing of AAOS, AANA, AOSSM, ISAKOS and ICRS. In the prior term, he was ICRS Chair of the Bylaws and Membership Committee and a member of the General Board. He is completing his term as Chair of the Education Committee of ISAKOS. Dr. Lane has published 35 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 12 book chapters. Dr. Lane was lead editor for “The Art of the Musculoskeletal Physical Examination” published by Springer.
