Dr. Appleton was recruited to the Division of Rheumatology at Western University in 2016 as Assistant Professor and Clinician Scientist in the Department of Medicine. He is cross-appointed to the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology and to Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. As Director of the Western Multidisciplinary Center for Osteoarthritis at the St. Joseph’s Health Care Rheumatology Centre, he leads multiple clinical trials of disease modifying therapy in osteoarthritis, clinical studies in patient cohorts, and the Rheumatology musculoskeletal ultrasound consultation service. Dr. Appleton is also the director the synovial translational biology research laboratory focused on discovery of inflammatory mechanisms and clinical phenotypes of osteoarthritis. At Western, Dr. Appleton is clinical advisor to the Bone and Joint Institute and Scientist at the Lawson Research Institute.
Dr. Appleton serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Ontario Rheumatology Association and Chair of the Scientific Committee at the Canadian Rheumatology Association. He also has a strong interest in clinical informatics and technology for generating real-world evidence and the use of real-world data for health quality improvement, which led to his role as Chair of the Informatics Committee at the Ontario Rheumatology Association where he is leading the Ontario Rheumatic Diseases Evaluation Registry project known as ORDER.
