In 1991 I finished my PhD on the topic Sports injuries in youth; etiology and prevention. Afterwards I kept special interest in young people, especially in younger athletes and children with injuries, chronic diseases or handicaps. To avoid physical inactivity and sedentary behavior we created plans and programmes to stimulate sports and exercise in a safe way. Our slogan is: every child has to participate in sportive activities for health and fitness. Furthermore there has to be special attention for those youngsters who fall out due by circumstances.
Since 2002 I am working as a sports physician in the University Medical Center Utrecht. By combining patient care, research and education we initiated the overall research programme Load and Capacity.
Within this programme we focused at two research lines, being:
Injuries and injury prevention
safe and responsible movement stimulation for people with a chronic disease or handicap.
From 2003 I have a close relationship with the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB), in which we developed four RCTs in order to reduce the risk of getting injured. One of those cohort studies, concerned prevention of ankle injuries in young female soccer players.
Sports medicine is a young medical specialty, characterized by a horizontal positioning where crossing takes place with all other fields in medicine. So every sports medicine physician is part of a team and team performance.
