Osteoarthritis is a painful disease that disproportionately affects postmenopausal women with obesity. Yet, most studies to date model disease in young, male, lean mice. To better understand OA as a systemic disease, Kelsey Collin’s lab is developing tools to dissect fat-joint interorgan crosstalk in preclinical models of male and female mice, young and aged mice, and obese and lean mice. Their goal is to leverage the novel mechanistic targets they identify to develop regenerative medicine strategies to mitigate OA and joint pain.
