Deepak Goyal is largely credited with bringing the cartilage science to the Indian subcontinent in 2005. He founded Indian Cartilage Society to propagate the cartilage science and to bring the ICRS ethos to India. Later he played an active role in formation of Asian Cartilage Repair Society. He served as the President of the Indian Cartilage Society, later leading ACRS as its President. Currently, he holds the prestigious position of Secretary General of ICRS.

He has served various positions in ICRS like Board Member (2009-2010, 2015-2017, 2022-2025), Chair Committee for Developing Regions (2010-2012), Chair Fellowship committee (2015-2016), Chair Byelaws & Membership committee (2022-2023). Presently he is also chair- Workgroup on Underrepresented Regions.

Prof Goyal has also played an active role in creating social awareness about joint preservation in south Asia thru campaigns called ‘Preserve the Joints’ and ‘Injury Free Sportsmen’.

He has won ESSKA Arthroscopy Scholarship (2005), ESSKA Arthroplasty Fellowship (2009), National Gold Medal by Indian Orthopaedic Association (2005), Best Paper Award of Indian Arthroscopy Society (2009). He was selected for the prestigious AOSSM fellowship in 2014. Recently, he has been nominated for the patellofemoral excellence research award of ISAKOS. He has chaired many national and international scientific congresses.

He has a private practice in India and is also appointed as Visiting Professor to the prestigious Graduate School of Biomedical & Health Sciences, Hiroshima University, Japan.

He has published many research articles and presented over 230 research papers and presentations globally. He is associate editor with JCJP and is editorial board member of AJSM. He has been invited as faculty worldwide and has actively contributed to many prestigious international associations like ESSKA, ISAKOS, IPSG, ICRS, APKASS etc.

He has many innovations to his credit like ‘the superficial quad technique’ for MPFL reconstruction, ‘the overlay ACI technique’ to treat large cartilage lesions with bony defects and ‘dynamic 3D printing of knee’ for patella instability cases. Recently he had a published a marvellous book on cartilage repair- The Illustrative Book of Cartilage Repair-. The book is probably the largest collection of high-quality colour images (>700) on cartilage repair.

Prof. Goyal’s relentless dedication to cartilage repair has significantly raised regional awareness. Today, nearly every orthopaedic conference in the region features dedicated sessions on cartilage repair and joint preservation—an enduring testament to his influence. Affectionately known among peers as “Mr. Unstoppable,” Prof. Goyal continues to inspire generations of orthopaedic surgeons across the globe.
