ICRS Grants, Fellowships & Scholarships

The ICRS and its partners have joined forces by offering several Fellowship and scholarship Programmes to the ICRS members. Applications are open only to young ICRS Members who are in good standing. The programme represents a serious commitment from ICRS and its partners to support highly motivated trainees and residents with basic science knowledge and clinical research skills. Together, we build a strong network and push for innovation. We believe that research is the engine of development and that linking and educating passionate young professionals is the way to advance the field of orthoregeneration significantly. Applications should be submitted before the deadline for each programme. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered. Please find current opportunities below.

ICRS Sports Medicine Fellowship 2025 at ASPETAR, Doha/Qatar

This fellowship aims to provide an opportunity for international exchange for young orthopaedic surgeons, fellows, or clinical scientists interested in cartilage regeneration and joint preservation with a particular focus on sports medicine. This will be accomplished by a stimulating environment with exposure to both science and clinical application of treatments for joint restoration in athletes. Selected fellows will spend ten days in the Aspetar Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Hospital, Doha, Qatar. This is an ICRS and ISAKOS training centre and a FIFA-accredited medical centre of excellence, one of the leading institutions worldwide in the spectrum of sports injuries, applying a multidisciplinary approach in diagnosis and treatment.

Fellows will visit the state-of-the-art facilities, including the sports surgery training centre, the sports medicine movement analysis laboratory, and the physiotherapy and rehabilitation area, and be exposed to other intriguing new treatment approaches like climatic chamber and virtual reality. Hosted by the godfather Emmanuel T. Papacostas, the fellows will arrive on January 30, 2025. They will also have the opportunity to conclude their fellowship by joining the 8th ICRS Surgical Skills Course “Understand it – See it – Do it”, February 6-9, 2025 (registration waived – lectures-only), which will bring together internationally acknowledged experts to highlight the most recent development in surgical techniques with regards to cartilage regeneration and joint preservation. A remarkable academic agenda on a full portfolio of cartilage treatment strategies and a special focus on knee and ankle injuries in sports pathology. The selected fellows will have the opportunity to network, exchange ideas in a high-profile hospital and sports facilities environment, view research facilities and surgical procedures, and participate in social and cultural events with the hosting cartilage repair community.

Two candidates will be selected and awarded with this fellowship covering the basic travel costs, hosting, and Surgical Skills Course participation (lectures-only) of this programme.

INSTRUCTIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicants must be ICRS Members in good standing and have a dedicated interest in cartilage treatments
  • Applicants must be under 40 years of age at the time of the application
  • A copy of the applicant’s passport must be attached to the application
  • Applicants must speak English fluently (the entire programme will be held in English)

Following this experience, fellows will be required to provide a written summary of their fellowship experiences to ICRS. A short oral presentation may be required by ICRS to be presented during the next ICRS International Congress.

ICRS Global Access Fellowship for Delegates from Underrepresented Regions

This new initiative by ICRS and the Cartilage & Joint Preservation Foundation, Inc. provides an opportunity for young orthopaedic surgeons, residents, fellows or scientists from South America, Africa and Asia who are interested in cartilage regeneration and joint preservation. These regions are currently underrepresented in the ICRS membership.

The ICRS Global Access Fellowship offers one fully hosted participation (including travel, hotel, event registration, all social and networking events) for the upcoming 8th Surgical Skills Course & Wet Lab in Doha/Qatar, from February 6-9, 2025.

Following this experience, the fellow is required to submit a written report of their experience to ICRS, which will be published on the website of the Cartilage & Joint Preservation Foundation, Inc. and shared with a wider ICRS community via ICRS digital channels.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Participation is restricted to applicants that are living in South America, Africa or Asia and working in the cartilage regeneration & joint preservation field.
  • Applicants must be under 40 years of age at the time of the application.
  • Applicants cannot have benefited from previous ICRS Fellowships.
  • Applicants must be fluent in English.
  • Priority is given to applicants that are an ICRS member or part of the wider ICRS community.

Scholarship Focus Meeting Patient Profiling in Cartilage Repair & Aspects of Juvenile Cartilage

This scholarship aims to provide an opportunity for young orthopaedic surgeons, residents, fellows, or scientists interested in cartilage regeneration and joint preservation. This will be accomplished by ICRS waiving the participation fee for the upcoming “Focus Meeting Patient Profiling in Cartilage Repair & Juvenile Cartilage Repair”. The Focus Meeting will take place in Munich, Germany from December 12 to 14, 2o24.

This will be an exciting meeting to join ICRS and the cartilage and joint preservation world! Up to 3 candidates will be selected and awarded with this scholarship, which waives the fee for subscription to the meeting.

INSTRUCTIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicants must be up to 30 years of age at the time of the application.
  • A copy of the applicant’s passport must be attached to the application.
  • Applicants must speak English fluently (the entire program will be in English).
  • Applicants must not have benefited from previous scholarships.

The selected candidates must become ICRS Members for the current year (the membership will last until the end of 2025).

2nd ICRS Regional Fellowship USA ICRS-JRF Ortho/Solvita Clinical Traveling Fellowship 2024

Objectives:

The programme’s objective is to provide an opportunity for young orthopaedic surgeons, residents, fellows, or clinical scientists to gain exposure to the world of articular cartilage injury, repair, and regeneration by meeting key experts in the field. Selected as potential leaders in cartilage regeneration and joint preservation, fellows will travel with their Godfather, Dr. Jack Farr from Indianapolis/IN, to visit research facilities, observe surgical procedures, and participate in social events with the hosting cartilage community.

Eligibility:

  • Candidates are ICRS Members in good standing.
  • Orthopedic surgeons, senior or chief residents, fellows, or clinical scientists, up to 40 years old, with a dedicated interest in cartilage regeneration and joint preservation.
  • Candidates must be working/studying in the USA.
  • Candidates must not have benefited previously from ICRS-related fellowship programs.
  • Candidates must speak English fluently (the entire program will be in English).

Vacancies: Three successful candidates will be awarded.

The application needs to be submitted in a single PDF and must include the following:

  • Letter of motivation with career goals (max 1 page).
  • Please provide a brief CV (not more than 2 pages) with information on the date of birth, current and past affiliations, degrees, awards, and research interests.
  • List of publications from the last 5 years, underlying those on cartilage and joint preservation, with titles and journal references.
  • Letter from the head of the department supporting your application (max 1 page)
  • Copy of passport and study certification.

Not respecting the above-mentioned indications will result in exclusion from the selection.

The Fellowship will occur from June 8 to 15, 2024, and will cover travel, hosting, and the main meals.
